EL ÁREA DEMOSTRATIVA DE SAN RAMÓN Y SU INFLUENCIA EN LA TRANSICIÓN A LA AVICULTURA INDUSTRIAL URUGUAYA

Abstract

The article deals with the influence that the San Ramón Demonstrational Area (Área Demostrativa de San Ramón, adsr), as settled by then Inter-American Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IICA) in conjunct action with the uruguayan government, had on the development of national poultry farming. The situation of poultry farming in the 1950s and 1960s is analized, as well as the process of inception of the adsr, its results, the causes for its termination, and its main contributions. The study concludes the adsr was substantial in the transition from small-scale to industrial poultry farming, even though it was not the only driver towards it.
