Women participation in backyards as an alternative in food sovereignty

The backyards system of production is an alimentary alternative for family sustenance. It is considered a part of the activities associated with the role of women within this community, as it’s located near to their households. The objective of this study consisted of analyzing the participation of women in agricultural production through the backyards system as contribution to food sovereignty. The study took place in two different locations within Tlalquitenango, Morelos, México. The methodology employed was exploratory-descriptive in nature. Thirty-one interviews were conducted, as well as different focus groups and field research trips. It was observed that edible plants represent 45% and 29% in each location. Garden produce is available throughout the whole year, surplus is used for commerce. The backyards system contributes to the institution of food sovereignty strategies for local families and it represents an opportunity for monetary income and savings.
