Abstract

This work aimed to characterize the new[2] family farmers who took over the autonomous management of the properties, comparing them with the family farming group in the region, and to identify the land acquisition process in six municipalities in the northwest of São Paulo (SP-Brasil). The data were obtained through the application of a questionnaire to 45 farmers with up to 12 years of management of the rural establishment, from indications of key informants and those surveyed. The surveyed farmers have many similarities, in socio-productive terms, with family farming in general in the region. Almost half (48.86%) bought the property, through public policy (Programa Nacional de Crédito Fundiário-PNCF) or land market, while inheritance, exclusively, represented only 26.67% of the cases.
