Abstract

The article analyzes the formation process of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) and the mediation relationship of the Catholic Church, in particular, with the experience of liberation theology. The text discusses the capitalist modernization of agriculture that occurred after the internationalization of capital in the 1970s as a historical context for the emergence of agrarian conflict in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It also deals with the historical elements related to the genesis of the MST's autonomy in relation to Catholic church. From CNBB documents, literature review and interviews with MST leaders, it is concluded that the Catholic Church, through its pastoral and mediating entities, was at the center of the organization and maturation of the MST, using processes traditional and popular theological However, with no more than a decade of existence, the movement has gained some autonomy, reconfiguring strategies, actions and political ties.
